It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a "local general aviation" facility.
The Evansville Regional Airport opened was originally used as a military airfield by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It briefly served as an auxiliary airfield to Douglas MacArthur Memorial Airport in Pleasure Ridge Park before being transferred to the United States Air Force on September 23, 1945. The airfield was then turned over to the Army Corps of Engineers who completed the construction of a paved runway and other facilities. The airport was renamed Evansville Regional Airportd in honor of Colonel Paul R. Evans, an officer who served with distinction during World War II.
